Comments/Notes:
I first visited this location in March of 2010, and then did a revisit in October of 2014. Back in 2010 the bridge was open and I believe that I seen the 4 waterfalls as indicated in the resources. On this day I traveled from north to south.
In October of 2014, the bridge was out and I did not get to the first waterfall which was north of the bridge as we were traveling up from the south to north. From the intersection of 5S and Creek Rd at .8 miles, is Falls 1, a 30 ft Cascade N42.99568 W74.78874. Road Trip to Rensselaer County, New York area 2/22/2014 Day 1
For this road trip, I had 24 planned stops. Of those 24, we seen 17, accidentally driving by 2, and we cut off 5 others due to time. This was about a 427 mile round trip in which I calculated about 10 hours. This did not include the time for stopping or hiking.

Clicking on the links will take you to the page with more photos and information.

Day 1

Washout Creek (Falls on) Schenectady County Eastern New York

As shown in the photos, I took a few snap shots to where we ended on the trail. We met a gentleman on snowshoes and asked him how much farther to the falls and he was telling us it was or would be very difficult to get down to the falls in the snow. And in answer to the question, we still had a bit further to go on the trail. At that point, the man said that Plotter Kill Falls was the place to go and that the falls were running the week prior. So we turned around and headed back out. I plan to return to this location in the near future.

Plotter kill Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York

We really did not know what we were getting into here, as I did not really do my research for this location, as it was not planned. First thing when we arrived we looked at the trail map to determine which direction to start. To make it short, we choose the rim trail. The falls we did see from top did not appear to be running, but we did not get down into the gorge either. We walked the whole length of the trail above and I took the best photos I could. We did meet up with another group that had walked the other side. In fact I did have some photos with them looking like little dots across the way. This is one location I plan to return to in the future.

Plotterkill Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York 2-22-2014_00007.JPG

Krystal Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York

The view of the falls from the road in which resources indicated to take did not give a clear view of the falls. We drove over to the restaurant/bar, “Pig N Whistles” their was quite the crowd of people and so we did not go in and get permission to access the falls. There was a fence up around the whole back and view of falls was not accessible. Also with all the snow it did not appear anyone was walking back there. Plans to return in the future.

Krystal Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York 2-22-2014_00001.JPG

Krystal Upper Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York

As we pulled out of the parking from the restaurant, I spotted this directly across the road and named it Upper Falls.

Lock 7 Dam and Falls Schenectady County Eastern New York

Located at the VISCHER FERRY HYDRO ELECTRIC PLANT. The gate was closed, however there is a small parking area at the top. The sign states a public fishing access. We walked around the gate and went down to the bottom. There were other folks there as well.

Buttermilk Falls (Schagticoke) Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is a roadside waterfalls. Downstream is another waterfall, which is on private property. I tried taking a couple of photos, which would be views of the top of that waterfall.

Hidden Falls Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is located on private property. Should I get to the location again, I plan on seeing if I can obtain permission for access.

Great Falls of the Hoosic Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is one of my corrected errors. Right location and information, had the wrong name. I had wrongly listed this as Hoosic Falls. This is also known as Great Falls. This one has the big dam on the one side of the bridge.

Great Falls of the Hoosic Rensselaer County Eastern New York 2-22-2014_00006.JPG

Valley Falls Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is also know as Schagticoke Falls. I believe I found this but there was no real photo opportunity as of ice and snow it did not look like much of anything. This is listed as being rapids.

Factory Hollow Falls Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is listed as having small drop of about 4 feet.

Factory Hollow Falls Rensselaer County Eastern New York 2-22-2014_00004.JPG

Goulds Creek (Falls on) South Oakwood Cemetery Rensselaer County Eastern New York

This is also known as Goulds Creek Lower Falls and Devil’s Kitchen Falls. By the time we got here and found it we were working with very little daylight. Plans to return to this location in the future.

Trail Description: Described within

Comments:
Putting together this whole section of Jenny Creek was and still is a bit confusing so I will piece it together as best as possible. When I checked this location out back in 2010, I had only 2 locations with the coordinates for. And those I had gotten from the World Waterfall database. Since then I have gain more knowledge along with better technology. I recently found that the American Whitewater has a page on this section of Jenny Creek. By matching my photos up with theirs along with similar descriptions, I have been able to make some corrections.

The whitewater route starts at Powell Road, south of Hwy 3. When I was there you could not drive on Jayville road all the way, as you come to where the bridge is out. So I did not check out their first 1.3 miles of the route.

3-This one here I had called Jenny Creek Upper Falls (Footbridge rapid Class III+)

Another Beaver Pond/Dam Class I-Jenny Creek

4-Now this one I had called Jenny Creek Middle Falls, but it falls in the location they called the Ugly Drop-Jenny Creek
You will see a huge rock and smaller rock on top, looks like a huge cairn, on the side of the road. It is a short scramble but the view was hard to get.

5-Middle Section Class IV-Jenny Creek

6-And this one I had called Jenny Creek Lower Falls, and again it falls within the location and photo match with what they called Jayville Rapid Class 5.0/Jayville Slide. This may also be known as Jenny Creek Falls. This is a roadside view.

7-Horrific– which is described as being 30-35 foot drop.-Jenny Creek
8-The Rest Class III they describe one more dangerous section which maybe what resources are calling Jenny Creek Lower Falls.

DENLEY DAM AND FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

This is a portage site for kayakers and canoes. There is a small parking area and the dam and falls can be seen from there.

ROCK ISLAND DAM AND FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

This is also another portage area for kayakers and canoes. The gate was open as they had the whitewater rafting run going on this weekend. Also from here you can look upstream and see Port Leyden dam and falls in the distance.

PORT LEYDEN DAM AND FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

We did not try accessing this from the other side as before. There is a school located there, and we parked in the lot and did a short scramble to get better views.

MILKHOUSE FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

The actual location for this waterfall is posted on private property. I realized when I got home and threw in my tracks in my mapping program, that I was at the backside of this. As I mentioned in my description, the land was not posted. HOWEVER, I do not recommend visiting location by this means. It is unsafe and very much a big liability should someone get hurt. I was following a stream down and came upon it, I was at the top of the falls, and went out and around to see what it looked like. But the whole area looks as though someone used it as a dump site and there is glass and metal everywhere. I would say to try and contact someone and get permission by other location listed on internet resources. And the same time maybe get a look at the Orthodox Church sitting there.

SWAN’S FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

This is on privately owned property but good views can be seen from the road.

ROARING BROOK UPPER FALLS LEWIS COUNTY

This waterfall is located within walking distance from the gate of Whitaker Falls State Park.

WHITAKER FALLS STATE PARK LEWIS COUNTY

I could not believe how much work had taken place at the park. However the trail in and around the waterfalls is still in dire need of repair and safety fencing. We happen to be lucky and came across a rope that someone had tied up and that’s how we got down in there. When we got down there was a group of young adults that we encountered and found out they had just been the ones to put the rope there. We were very thankful they left the rope there for us to get back

UNNAMED FALLS ON HWY 12 NEAR RAILROAD TRACKS LEWIS COUNTY

This was a delight to see. How we missed it on the way up, no clue. There is no trail up to the top. It was posted on the left hand side of the falls. We tried walking up the falls rock hopping as far as we could. It was very slippery, as it was raining. From the road you will have to walk across the railroad tracks, but this can be seen right from the highway.

BAKERS FALLS ONEIDA COUNTY

LANSING KILL FALLS ONEIDA COUNTY

The access to both Lansing and Bakers is same parking, same path. There is parking for maybe two or three cars. You can see the falls right from the road. The canal trail system is right there also. The path was very slippery and steep.

Hiking Trip To Hanging Spear Falls 10-15-2008

This was my first big hike and my most memorable one!! This is when I learned about how heavy a backpack gets when you are completely soaked!! I learned my pack was not very comfortable, and later down the road purchased one that sat better on my hips!! I learned very quickly what a Thunder Box was….lol So below I have posted albums for every section of the hike from beginning to end.

To start out our first day we did not get an early start and arrived at the trailhead register about 12 noonish. I was so ready for the hike in!!!
